How to Choose the Nail Shape that Suits You?

by LynEva 31 Oct 2022 0 Comments

Manicures are an essential way to enhance your hand's appearance, so it's important to choose a nail shape that complements your hand shape. Here are some popular hand shapes and the recommended and avoided nail shapes to match them.

1. Short and Plump Hands

These hands also known as "baby hands," are characterized by longer palms and shorter fingers, with a round and full shape that feels quite fleshy when held.

Recommended Nail Shapes:

Short and plump fingers are more suitable for oval and almond-shaped nail designs, as they visually elongate the finger length.

Avoid Nail Shapes:

Try to avoid round or square shapes, which are similar in width to the finger shape and don't provide significant enhancement for this hand type.

2. Pointed Tapered Hands

Pointed tapered hands are characterized by fingers that gradually narrow from the base to the tips. As you move toward the fingertips, the fingers become slimmer, with a significant difference in width between the front of the fingertips and the widest part of the palm. Visually, this hand type appears extremely slender and elegant.

Recommended Nail Shapes:

For pointed tapered hands, square or squoval nail shapes are a great choice. These shapes help balance the proportion between the palm and fingers, creating a more harmonious and symmetrical overall hand appearance.

Avoid Nail Shapes:

When trimming nails for pointed tapered fingers, it's advisable to avoid shapes that elongate the fingers further, such as oval, almond, and stiletto.

3. Bony Hands

Bony hands are characterized by prominent knuckles or joints along with slender fingertip areas, resembling a bit of a bamboo joint shape. When the fingers are brought together, there are noticeable spaces between them.

Recommended Nail Shapes:

Bony hands go well with square or rounded nail shapes.

Avoid Nail Shapes:

Oval and almond shapes, which elongate the appearance of the fingers, are not the best choices for bony hand types.

4. Elongated or Proportional Hands

These hand types are characterized by a hand-to-finger length ratio between 1:1 and 1:0.618, falling close to the golden ratio. Besides, fingers are relatively uniform in thickness from the joints to the fingertips. These hand types are generally seen as attractive and balanced.

Elongated or proportional hands can suit various nail shapes. With well-maintained nails, you have the freedom to choose from a wide range of styles and colors.
